Brinley made the memory box with the family and earned the family’s trust. When the day did come for extubation, the family asked specifically for Brinley to stay with them as we extubated.
I just wanted to bring up a difficult case we had in the NICU, a baby with severe HIE and a mother who was on methamphetamines. This poor baby had a father who was incarcerated and a mother who was unable to be located. The baby had a devastating brain injury, with seizure activity and ventilator dependency. Unfortunately, we were waiting for court clearance for compassionate extubation and allowing the extending family to visit this child. Our patient had no visitors for the first 2-3 weeks of her life, yet had a very loving extended family eagerly waiting to be with her. The reason I want to bring up this case is because of the outstanding care given by our NICU nurse, Brinley Siemonsma. Brinley went above and beyond for this child’s care. She became an associate nurse for this case early on when this baby had no visitors. Then as we were able to allow extended family to visit (MGM, maternal aunt, and grandaunt), Brinley took extra shifts to be with the baby and help support the family. As we were awaiting the finalization of the court ruling for compassionate extubation, Brinley made the memory box with the family and earned the family’s trust. When the day did come for extubation, the family asked specifically for Brinley to stay with them as we extubated. Brinley not only stayed but assisted in taking photos of the family with the baby and being a supportive presence for the family. I had to make Brinley go home as she had worked so many consecutive days and she was staying well beyond her shift, it was obvious that Brinley had put this baby and family’s needs above her own. There are so many positives that our staff and NICU can bring for our family. Brinley is an exceptional nurse and what she did was exemplary of what our NICU can provide. Although she did this for her patient, I want to make sure that Brinley’s hard work did not go unnoticed by this family, her peers, and myself. I am very proud of the growth I have seen in one of our young nurses but more proud of what was accomplished for this patient in the NICU. The care of this child is the model we strive for, consistent associate nursing with our NICU staff, who were trained by us. With all that is going on it is always nice to hear good and loving work done by our staff despite the sad circumstances.
