I was on complete bed rest, lying flat on my back for 5 days. During that time, I was lucky enough to have Bree as my nurse for 3 days in a row. On the first day, she took time to get to know me and continually put my mind at ease through all the discomfort and difficulties associated with lying flat on your back for that duration of time. She is funny, kind, compassionate and has a genuine love for her job. She never made me feel like my needs were causing her additional stress, even though I knew she had a lot of tasks she was juggling between taking care of my room and my neighbor's room at the same time. She took the time to speak me with and help me understand my condition. She answered every question I asked with patience and an enthusiasm indicative of a teacher helping her student to learn.
Not only did she listen to me and take time to get to know me, but she also learned to read my body language and picked up on my non-verbal communication. She helped me to understand the doctor's language and broke down my complex medical situation into something manageable and not nearly as scary. She helped me to feel safe and I knew the whole time, under her care, that I was being taken good care of. The consistency of care was a huge value to me as it helped me to feel confident and better able to communicate my needs to Bree. Because of the consistency of care, Bree was able to learn my needs and was able to attend to my care on a higher level.
She took time to say good bye to me after each shift and at the end of our 3 days together, she took extra time to give me her well-wishes. Then, to my surprise, on her day off, she delighted me by bringing me a balloon! She gave of her time to stop by the hospital to check on me to see how I was doing and to make sure I was continuing to progress in the right direction. I was so happy and so surprised to see her. Her small gesture of kindness meant so much to me and I will be forever grateful for the time I spent in her care.
Bree's ability to help her patients find joy and laugh despite their circumstances is a true gift. Bree's amazingly positive attitude and her ability to give compassionate care are why I feel she deserves the DAISY Award.
