Beverly Schmidgall is the quintessential nurse. She is a role model for every nurse that works with her. She’s been a nurse for more years than she’d like to admit and has accumulated a vast repertoire of skills. In our Infusion & Wound Care dept, she can do EVERYTHING. Some nurses only do wound care, some only infusion, but Bev does it all. Not only does she do it all, she does it with her heart and soul and does it very well.
She is known to give needy patients clothing, food and went above and beyond by arranging for one patient, a much needed shower. This is not a service we are able to provide in our clinic but she “pulled some strings” and arranged for it especially for this patient.
Compassion is her middle name, that sounds corny, but it’s true. She would literally give the shirt off her back for another. She has done numerous mission trips to India and Africa. These are not cushy trips, she is putting herself in these peoples shoes and ministering to their physical and spiritual needs. She’s leaving in November for another trip to India. She’s amazing!
Because of her long work history with Salem Hospital, her insight is very valuable. She is a much sought after preceptor for students and orienting nurses. She is a real people person, proud of her work and our department and committed to nursing excellence always. I can’t think of a more deserving recipient of the DAISY Award.
