Bethanie came to the 6th floor and I greeted her asking why she was up here, so I could help her if she needed. She asked if she could speak with one of my employees. I joked with her and explained that this nurse "would NOT to be transferring to the E.D."
She laughed and reassured me that she was not up on the unit to recruit for the E.D. She did inform me that she had heard that one of my employees hadn't passed their nursing boards and she wanted to talk to that employee and let them know that she did a review course to help them study. I asked if this was something the hospital did and she reported "nope...it's something that I do". I was so pleasantly surprised to hear her stories about other people whom she had helped to pass their boards and start their nursing careers.
This is an amazing story! What a giving, kind, considerate and completely selfless act that Bethanie commits to our profession! Nursing encompasses so many different aspects of life, but perhaps most importantly Nursing is caring for other people without the expectation of payback or personal gain. That is what Bethanie has exemplified here. She does this on her own, she doesn't get paid, she doesn't receive accolades and it is completely not an expectation of her job. I for one feel proud that she represents our organization as well as our profession!
