Barb showed immense compassion for the patient and the family. She helped ease their fears and got the patient comfortable.
I just wanted to give a HUGE shout-out to Barb for her caring and calming presence last night with a new admit patient with complex nausea and pain concerns, limited medications available, and during multiple phone calls and attempt to get equipment in the home. Once the equipment arrived, she went to his home and set up his CADD pump and thoroughly reviewed medications, and attempted to get the patient comfortable. She did not just assume that the patient would call back or wait until the next day but followed up later in the evening and she had to make a second visit to the patient's home to continue to adjust medications and provide comfort for the family. This was an extremely complex medical and emotional day for the family. I was able to overhear Barb talking and educating the family and carefully and gently walking the family through complicated concerns and the situation. The family and even I felt more at ease listening to her. She showed immense compassion for the patient and the family. She helped ease their fears and got the patient comfortable. She could have just left report for the on-call or next shift, but she takes her calling personally and attempts to do the best clinical work for each patient. The patient was able to get some well-needed rest, his pain was reduced, and the family was relieved that they were not alone. She went above and beyond to make sure that the patent was safe, medications were appropriate, and the family understood what was going on.
