While Anne is not present on the oncology floor to administer treatments, she is instead the backbone of patient care and relaying information between the providers, as well as setting up outside appointments.
I am a TNMBC patient at Rex Cancer Center and have been receiving weekly treatments for the last two years. While there are many phenomenal nurses on the infusion floor, there is one special standout nurse who works diligently behind the scenes to pull patient care together. It is with the highest regard that I nominate Anne Shook and would love to tell you a little more about her.

While Anne is not present on the oncology floor to administer treatments, she is instead the backbone of patient care and relaying information between the providers, as well as setting up outside appointments.
The day I found out that I had Stage 4 Cancer was a complete shock to me. I was only 36, and due to Covid regulations, attended the appointment alone. Anne was present at that appointment as the notetaker. This was also the day that I welcomed Anne into my life and knew that she would take me under her wing and help to provide only the utmost positive and in-depth care for me.

My family is spread out among multiple states and cannot get to North Carolina on short notice. Being a single person, it is difficult to tend to my care on my own and be filled with worries and questions. This is where Anne comes in. From the get-go, she has been available to answer all questions that I have had and has helped lessen and take away my anxiety. She also acts as a mother figure in helping me to stay on top of my symptoms, medications, and to call in when necessary. This kindness and quick action on her part has lifted the worry and burden from my family when they cannot be nearby.

Anne is action-driven, a problem solver, and genuinely cares for those around her. She will often call, email, and take time out of her busy schedule to come and visit me during treatments to check-in.  She keeps me smiling, laughing, and above all, feeling immensely loved. No matter what, Anne is always there with a hug ready, a pep talk, and to be my biggest cheerleader. She makes me feel like the most important and valued person in the room and has gone way beyond surface level to get to know me as M, and not just a patient name on the list or schedule.

How lucky I am to know and experience the ray of sunshine who is Anne. She has been such an imperative piece to UNC Rex, the doctors and providers, and patients alike. It is my highest honor to nominate Anne for a 2023 DAISY Award for the love and commitment that she puts into her work. It is more than clear that she has a passion for others and does not look at her work as simply a job.
