Andy brought a bedside computer into the room and stayed with the couple until the flight crew arrived.
The patient arrived at the ER by EMS in rough shape. They needed a bi-pap machine to help them breathe. The machine was causing the patient anxiety and so the doctors ordered medication to help. The patient didn't want to take medication right away, they wanted to be active in the decision-making for their plan-of-care. Andy was very understanding and did not administer the meds right away. He was calm throughout the patient's stay and kept them informed at every moment. He asked for their opinion on the next steps before they occurred. Once all the planning was complete, Andy asked if they wanted to take their medication, since their breathing was fast. Once administered, he brought a bedside computer into the room and stayed with the couple until the flight crew arrived. Andy provided exemplary patient and family-centered care, combined with his calm bedside manner led to a great experience in the ER under unfavorable circumstances. Nurses like Andy truly make OMH an amazing community asset.
