I've worked with Amanda several times in recent weeks. This week in the ER, Amanda was the nurse for a patient who had come in from the field with cardiac arrest. She assisted the team in caring for the patient with professionalism and skill. What really impressed me after death was pronounced was how she interacted with the patient's family. The ER family room was occupied, so Amanda found a vacant room where the team could speak with the patient's wife and family. Her compassionate and gentle demeanor was front and center in reaching out to the wife and family.
As Amanda and other nurses often do, she continued to work through her lunch hour to make sure the family could see the patient without tubes and such after the ME cleared the matter and cleaned the patient. This involved cleaning the bloodstains from his head from when he fell as he suffered the heart attack working at home. She made him presentable so the family's memory of him in the ER would be less dramatic.
Amanda also timely alerted Living Legacy about the death, and as a result of this, the patient's family donated his corneas and tissue. Incredibly, she managed this while also caring for other patients too! She even retrieved personal belongings for the family at their request, during what normally would be her lunch hour.
Amanda read the situation with the family, understood the dynamics of grief, and treated all gently and kindly. She is a role model and an outstanding caregiver.
