Alyssa was not only meticulous and precise with her care, but she was also calm and kind to me.
My husband suffered sudden cardiac arrest at 42 years old. When the arrest occurred, we were fortunate enough to be together and among a couple of friends. He was taken to MGH and was transported to the Ellison 9 (CCU) from the ER. In the CCU he underwent a 24-hour sedated cooling procedure to help minimize any brain swelling that could lead to brain damage from a lack of oxygen during the time of his cardiac arrest. There was a long waiting period between when he was sent to the CCU and when I could see him, as his 35-year-old wife, this was challenging. The medical staff needed to first receive the results of his COVID test before allowing visitors. When I first saw him in the CCU it was for a brief time at which point I was made aware of the cooling protocol that was getting ready to begin. The next day Alyssa B. was his nurse. It has been a week since all of this has happened, and my husband is still in the hospital -- and slowly healing thank goodness – but during this time Alyssa has been superb. She really set the bar extraordinarily high. During her time with my husband, she barely left his side. She sat at the computer station in his room and continuously monitored his body temperature and medications to ensure he was in the best condition possible during the cooling procedure. During the days that he was sedated, cooled, and being cared for by Alyssa I was sitting in the corner of the room totally in shock about what was happening to my young husband. We have an entire life left to live together and here I was faced with the idea that might never happen. Alyssa was not only meticulous and precise with her care, but she was also calm and kind to me. She asked me questions about my husband and even gave me a “Getting to Know Me” poster board to complete so other nurses and doctors could learn about what makes my husband a person, not just a patient. I completed the board, she read it and that led to more talks about our travels together and her desire to travel more one day. I'll never forget Alyssa. She was only doing her job, but she did it so well. So genuine and caring. She was the only other person in the room with us during the most difficult time of our life and she not only cared for my husband in the hospital bed but also for his loved ones who were cheering him on. I'll always be grateful to her. Thank you, Alyssa.
