My husband and I would like to recognize an outstanding human being, who just so happens to be a nurse at Martin Health System.
Her name is Abby Hindman. I am certain you have heard about this angel of a nurse from either other patients or her coworkers. We were privileged to have Abby as our nurse during the most difficult days we have ever experienced.
Recently, my husband, aged 52, was admitted to the hospital after an ER visit. We were told shortly after arriving that he had tumors in his lungs, liver, and pancreas. We were moved to North Hospital, and we were in complete shock.
The doctor came in with more bad news and the news continued to get worse as they days went on. In comes our angel, Abby. With her warm and caring smile and fantastic bedside manner, she made us feel like we were her family and her only patient. Abby arranged for us to have a private room and brought a reclining chair in for me to rest. I did not leave my husband's side in fear that I may not bring him home.
Abby was the calm and reassurance in this storm we were in. She made sure we were comfortable and answered any questions we had in regards to tests and results. Abby made sure my husband was getting his medicine exactly when he needed it. We never had to ring the nurse's bell; she was always there to check on us. I know that the hospital beds were full and the nurses had more than enough to deal with; this did not stop Abby from giving us excellent care both physically and emotionally.
We were moved to the third floor, Oncology, and Abby continued to check on us and let us know she was concerned with how we were doing. This gesture meant more than we can even express. Up until this hospital visit, my husband and I led healthy, active lives. This completely rocked our world and I can truly say that in the darkest hour of our existence, Abby demonstrated excellence, compassion, and concern. This simple act of going above and beyond her job description has left us feeling so grateful and privileged to have had her as our nurse, and someone we consider a friend.
My husband and I are home after a second visit to the hospital where once again, Abby checked in on us. We can look at this terrible diagnosis and still see the blessing that has come from this journey. One of the biggest and most important blessings was our angel, Abby. We will never forget the excellent care she gave to us; she is the perfect example of love. Every time I mentioned her name to one of the staff at Martin, they would smile and have a word of praise about her.
Thank you for employing such an excellent nurse. We are forever grateful.
