It started as an ordinary day, a Wednesday, when a family member of a patient who had been discharged days ago came to our Unit, bringing us a cake and a bag of nougat. She said the nougat was especially for a nurse named “Yu Jinshuang”, and she told us the story:

I am the daughter of a patient who was hospitalized here a few days ago. You took great care of him although he was critically ill. The nurse who had responsibility for his care is named Yu Jinshuang. She explained everything before she did any procedure although my father might not hear her because he was in a coma. She carefully turned my father to check his skin. She was excellent in explaining tubes and devices attached to our loved ones. She kept us updated on my father’s condition by communicating with us regularly. She eased our worries by contacting our doctor and arranging some time for us to talk with the doctor. There are so many things she did that I appreciate so much. When I would say “thank you” to her, she would always give me a big smile and say, “I was just trying my best to do my job”.

However, everything came to an end so suddenly yet so predictively. My father passed away that night when Yu was on duty. She comforted us and tidied my father’s bed. She was very calm and reflected her professionalism well. She explained to my dad as usual, “Now I will remove the tube out of your trachea; it may be uncomfortable for a moment. I will be gentle.” We all knew that my father was gone at that time, yet she still treated him like he could hear and like a decent human being. She showed great respect to my father from the beginning to the end. We were truly surprised that a nurse could be so considerate, kind and professional. We want to show our thanks to her and to all the great nurses in your hospital. I hope this sweet nougat will relieve a little bit of her fatigue after a busy night shift like the one when my father left us. Thank you all!
