Sherlene Smith provided exemplary care to my dad during his recent lengthy stay in the ED. I have a large family, and over the course of the afternoon and evening, much of my family gathered at dad’s side, waiting for his diagnosis and discharge. It was a difficult day for us – We ended up getting very bad news regarding dad’s diagnosis. Throughout it all, Sherlene was a kind, gracious, calming presence. She treated dad with courtesy and respect – I was especially touched that she took the time to listen to dad reminisce about his younger years, meeting my mom, and how important family was to him – holding his hand as she listened. I am so grateful that she took the time to do this, even though she didn’t really have to. To me, it demonstrated her reverence for the individual – that she saw him as a person, not just a diagnosis and that she just listened when dad needed to talk. Sherlene treated my entire family with compassion, as we dealt with the bad news. She provided us with much needed privacy, and checked in frequently to see if there was anything we needed. My entire family was very impressed and grateful for the excellent care Sherlene (and the rest of the ED team) provided dad during our time at SEH.
