Rosetta is a strong staff resource, educator, and advocate for patients, families, and the nursing staff. When Rosetta comes to do pain rounds on the CVU she makes a point of discussing the patient with the primary nurse prior to and after she visits with the patient and family, to make sure that the plan of care is understood and agreed upon. She understands that in order to fully meet the needs of the patient and family, it is of utmost importance to collaborate and work with the healthcare team. She includes the patient, their family, and the nursing staff in the planning and execution of care. She is changing the culture of healthcare team collaboration at Penrose by consistently serving as a role model.
Her caring attitude and passion to provide the best possible care and pain relief for her patients do not end when she leaves the floor. Although she is very thorough with her patients, she often calls later in the day to check on the comfort level of those she has seen. We have heard many patients or their family members compliment Rosetta's caring and listening manner. We always agree when they use the word "Angel" to describe her.
We had a patient who was used to taking large amounts of pain medications to manage his acute and chronic pain who needed a procedure. Doing this procedure at the bedside is one of the most painful experiences for patients, despite pre- and post-procedure medications of opioids, sedatives, and anxiolytics. Plus, the nursing staff is required to be 1:1 with the patient for 2-3 hours. Rosetta spearheaded a collaborative effort involving cardiothoracic surgeons, NPs, anesthesiologists, ICU, CVU nursing staff, and most importantly the patient, that ultimately spared him from a painful experience. She arranged for the procedure to be done while on a ketamine drip in the ICU. After that time, the patient was back on his regular pain regimen back on CVU.
She is a champion for following correct policy and procedure. Her recent e-mail reminder to use IV fluids with all PCA pumps was a gentle but needed reminder for staff. By taking the time to explain the why of interventions and the policy associated with them, she has helped to ensure that patients will receive proper and consistently excellent care at Penrose.
Rosetta is an extremely busy expert in her field yet, she makes it a point to slow down, teach, collaborate, and comfort those in need, sometimes it is a frazzled primary nurse, making all feel comfortable and cared for in her presence.
