I would respectfully like to nominate Randee Robinson, RN, 5EH, for the DAISY Award. I am a nursing student who worked under Randee's supervision for over 100 hours. During this time I witnessed Randee perform exceptional patient care unrelentingly. Several patients confided in me how fortunate they felt to have her as a nurse.

One particular patient had a history of IV drug addiction and was struggling to keep his pain level under control. He had multiple ulcers which he insisted on bandaging himself. The patient was frequently agitated and on multiple occasions verbally lashed out at me. He was clearly frustrated with his condition. Randee, on the other hand, never allowed herself to be frustrated or insulted, and continuously offered the patient empathetic and nonjudgmental care. She was often able to diffuse his aggravation through her demeanor. At one point he rolled onto his side, and she noticed the dry skin on his back. She offered to rub cream on his back, and the patient was instantly transformed. He appeared to be on the verge of tears, stating repeatedly that no one had touched him caringly in years.

In that moment Randee demonstrated to me the true nature of nursing. Sometimes it takes more than administering pain medications to control pain. Sometimes the simplest of gestures are the most profound.
