Nina is one of the most incredible, compassionate nurses that I have encountered anywhere. I have a million reasons that I could nominate her for this award but her recent care of a Trisomy 18 patient that was part of our Never Alone Program is a perfect example for why she should receive the DAISY Award.
Nina helped this family through their transition from birth to discharge home with hospice as the family's advocate, support and loving nurse. She took initiative to being specialized training for the mother to provide home gavage feeds and other training to get her home as quickly as possible so the family could all be together for the infant's short life expectancy. She, along with her colleagues, made a real difference in the lives of this patient and her family.
I was thrilled that Nina was mentoring a new nurse during the care of this most recent patient as she is an excellent teacher and often mentor. I am thrilled that she is teaching the next generation her excellent bedside manner and compassion. One can always tell which new nurses she orients - as they take on her style. It continues to make Holy Cross Hospital a wonderful place to work!
Nina consistently bonds with families while providing care and support that help them through these difficult times in their lives. She is currently collecting money to support a family of ours who lost their child at two years after a chronic illness as she remained in contact with continued support.
