My father was scheduled for a heart valve replacement and a triple bypass at 9 in the morning but there was an emergency that morning and we got pushed back. Dr. A ended up with two surgeries before he even was able to start my dad at 3:45 PM that day. Little did we know what we were up against.
We sat for quite a while without any information then finally, as we now refer to her, our angel nurse showed up and said she was here to keep us informed on my dad. So we finally got to wish our dad luck and give him a hug and kiss and said it will be fine see you in a few hours. Nancy came out and kept us informed that everything was going great the valve was done then the bypass was complete and all looked good. Then Nancy had to come tell us that coming off the bypass machine is a critical part of the operation and she would keep us updated. Things went south and Nancy had to come tell us to be prepared twice that things were not going well.
We are a family of faith and all we knew to do was to pray that things went the way they were meant to go and to guide Dr. A as we knew his skill was beyond amazing. Our angel nurse sat with us till after 11 when the surgery finally finished and even after that to make sure we were ok and let us know what would happen next.
My dad made it through with a team of amazing people from the heart surgical team, the ICU team of nurses and doctors and the whole floor team of nurses have finally gotten my dad to rehab as of yesterday. We cannot put into words what Nancy meant to us that night that the surgery took 8 hours. She is an amazing person and nurse and checked on my dad while in ICU. She was so compassionate to my mom and to our entire family.
Nancy is everything and more that the DAISY Award stands for and we will never forget her.
