Marti Garfield's compassion, clinical expertise, attention to detail and mentorship make a positive difference every day to patients, their families, and colleagues.
Prior to her current role as a case manager, Marti often precepted new nurses. She is credited with teaching them to treat patients as if they are family members; write thorough discharge instructions; practice good assessment skills; know what medications a patient is getting and why; and review all policies and protocols.
The colleague who nominated Marti for the DAISY Award recalls Marti creating a pocket guide for her as a new nurse to help keep track of important details. "I kept that with me for a very long time until I could remember on my own. I still have it in my locker and have shared it with several of the nurses I have oriented."
In her case manager role, Marti is recognized for going above and beyond to ensure that each patient's transition to home or a rehabilitation facility goes smoothly; that the patient and family are happy with the plan; and that all appropriate services are in place.
A recent example involved a patient scheduled for discharge. Marti called the pharmacy to make sure they had a specific medication in stock. Only two local pharmacies had it, so taking the time to make that call saved the patient and her son a lot of grief trying to figure that out on their own."
Colleagues appreciate Marti for being an exemplary source of knowledge and support, not only to patients but also to staff. She is such a valuable resource, whether answering our questions, reassuring us, giving advice or recommendations, or just being a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen."
