This DAISY, Lizzy Maliekal, displayed great compassion while caring for a very young patient who was dying. Recently, while caring for this terminally ill patient, Lizzy discovered the patient’s mother lived in California. The patient was a DNR and not expected to live too much longer. Lizzy called the patient’s mother in California and notified her of her daughter’s current condition and suggested her mother come to be at her side as soon as possible. The patient’s mother did exactly this. Once the mother arrived on our unit, she began to share with Lizzy how her daughter left her home at the age of 24. The patient is now 37 years of age and her mother had not seen her for over 12 years. She was not aware of her daughter’s terminally ill condition. The mother was also unaware that her daughter had been living in a care home which she had been transferred to from prison. The mother of this patient thanked Lizzy for calling her so that she could be at her daughter’s side to hold her hand and be there with her because she believes in the Methodist way of “no one will die alone”. This young lady did not die alone…she was hand in hand with her mother at her side. Compassion is an attribute that many seek after but some never find the real deal. Lizzy is a caring, concerned, dedicated, compassionate nurse to say the least. The 11-7 nursing staff has had the opportunity to witness Lizzy in action but we would like for the DAISY Award Committee to display to all of Methodist North our 5th floor DAISY!
