Kylie's role in the activation process is to respond and facilitate getting a patient to surgery quickly if necessary. In two specific instances, Kylie has made a difference by having an excellent understanding of what is happening in her department and facilitating communication with the trauma surgeon or a specialist. While this is Kylie's job, she does it in a way that is meaningful, professional, and works to break down the barriers that occur or can occur in our process. In the first situation she facilitated communication that allowed a backup surgeon to respond quickly to a tier I trauma activation (a double gunshot wound to the chest), and in the second situation, she facilitated communication with an orthopedic surgeon for a tier II trauma activation (a hi-speed rollover with hand injuries). We all know that communication is often the most significant barrier when things go wrong. The Emergency Department Physicians and staff also recognize Kylie for her reliable response to our Trauma patients. Kylie's ability to efficiently and effectively communicate with her staff in these situations made a difference for these patients and is important to the Trauma Program and important to our organization.
