It is my pleasure to write a recommendation for Julie Madison for the DAISY Award. For 35 continuous years Julie has been providing care to the patients of Clarinda Regional Health Center. She has guided women through labor and delivery, has provided soothing confident care to worried patients night and day, and has been a mentor to countless young nurses who wanted to be as good as she is.
What I treasure most is the many years she has served as my nurse in our primary care clinic. Julie is my partner. She remembers everything that has ever happened to each patient and that knowledge guides us in the care we provide. We often collaborate on what is wrong with the patient and how we can best address the problem. In this day and age when it seems that patients are confronted by a different provider each time they enter the health care system people need a doctor-nurse team that they know will care for and support them year after year, illness after illness. Our patients know that regardless of where they are in the world they can always call us and they will immediately be talking with their nurse Julie who knows them intimately and will move mountains to ease their suffering.
Besides working with me in our clinic here in Clarinda, Julie has accompanied me on five different mission trips to El Salvador. She is such an intelligent talented nurse that she can fill in just about anywhere we are understaffed. Many times that has involved donning her stethoscope and diagnosing and treating patients right beside us doctors.
Perhaps the real testament to her outstanding abilities came last year when we had two medical students with us. They were not yet qualified to take care of patients on their own so we assigned them to Julie and she showed them how to examine, diagnose, and treat the many Salvadoran children and adults that she cared for each day. What a joy it was for me each time I could take a moment and watch her providing compassionate care to their patients while at the same time challenging the medical students through hands-on learning.
All of us at Clarinda Regional Health Center have been fortunate to have Julie on our team. Her care and dedication to our patients has served as a guide that we can all seek to follow.
