As a nurse, Jill is a high performer who consistently advocates for patients. However, as a cancer survivor, she is very passionate about helping cancer patients cope with the many challenges they face. She has a unique gift bag that she gives to women receiving chemotherapy that helps them cope with their hair loss and other issues. The bag contains a fleece cap or two to keep their head warm at night. Jill has mentioned that it's surprising how cold your head and ears are without hair and that she found the soft fleece caps more comforting than the knit or crochet ones. Jill also includes an ACS pamphlet that was particularly helpful to her. Jill not only has given this gift bag to patients, but she has also given to her fellow nurses when she knows they have a family member with cancer. Jill's quiet voice and compassionate manner is so reassuring to those anxious patients, and her own experiences put her in a unique position to connect with others facing the same journey. She proudly wears her hospital ID with her picture of very short hair post-chemo as a "badge of honor" to show patients that she survived and they can, too. For patients to hear from a person who has truly experienced their side of the bed is very reassuring. Although the gift bag is very unique, the real gift is Jill's heart and spirit and her willingness to go above and beyond to care for those around her. Jill Kauffman is a true role model for nurses!
