I was called by Jamie Miller at home around 9:30pm. She stated that a father was calling in from Ronald McDonald House, they had just gotten in and they did not receive a pre-op phone call from SDS and he did not know what to do. Jamie reviewed with me that she had already taken the time to research the patient’s chart and found two different notes by two of the proceduralists that he was to have surgery (He was a joint urology, ENT and oral maxillofacial). Jamie searched through everything she could find online but was unable to see anything that gave indication of actual date and he was not on our or the Satellite Centers OR schedule. After exhausting her options she contacted me. We reviewed the option of calling one of the surgeons to see if they had any information as maybe he was a late add-on we were not notified of. I left the situation with Jamie to call the surgeon and if no luck then we could call them first thing in the am when the surgeons arrived to review what we could do. I then found out the next day Jamie took the time to call the surgeons who agreed to have the family report to SDS in the am as an add-on. Jamie then coordinated the plan for NPO times, etc. with Anesthesia and the family. She then completed the PreOp call. At this time she found out they were from 3+ hours away and they did not think about the baby needing a clear diet. This baby needed Pedialyte as he required GT feeds. It was 10pm by this time so Jamie went to the Ronald McDonald House and delivered all the supplies to the family so they would not have to try to navigate around the city to find what they needed at this late time. In addition she gave them meal tickets to get a pizza from our cafeteria as they had not had any dinner. The next day it was figured out the family had the wrong date as one of the three surgical offices had informed them wrong. The entire PeriOp team pulled together though and did proceed with completing the child’s multiple procedures that day. Jamie took the time to call in first thing in the morning to make sure the SDS CL had all the information she needed regarding the patient. She was worried about what would happen and wanted to make sure the issue was followed up on appropriately. This is a perfect example of the Mission, Vision and Values of our Hospital and how Jamie put this family first. She could have ignored the issue and left it for the morning staff but instead took the time to try to solve the problem. She took much of her own time to try to improve this family’s situation and then even providing the follow-up the next day. If this wouldn’t have happened there probably was a good chance the surgery would not have happened. Jamie has worked at CHP for over 25 years and is an excellent nurse. Many people would describe her as quiet but she always approaches every situation with a positive attitude, is willing to lend a hand to any co-worker and see to all her patient’s needs. She is a great example of going above and beyond - completing all the little extras on a daily basis for all her patients, many of which are not even realized by the staff. She exemplifies the caring and compassion of someone that puts her patients and families first on a daily basis.
