I entered the Stem Cell Transplant program on 7 Hamilton. While I had wonderful care from all of the nurses day and night, Erin Mitchell stood out for the following reasons:
She was always upbeat and positive. She never left the room without making sure I was okay and asking my husband if he needed anything, as he spent most days at my side.
She answered all my questions and often made me feel that I was progressing even when I felt down.
She took time just to talk to me about my family, our children, our "snowbird" life. As she was assessing how I was doing with all of these conversations, I felt there was a genuine interest beyond the necessary assessment.
She came in to check on me after my husband left one afternoon shortly after my cells had been returned to my body. It must have been around 4:15 when she came in. Normally I would have been awake but on this afternoon I had a temperature of 103.2 just beginning to rage. She, along with other staff members, iced me down, rubbed me with cool clothes and took care of me until I finally became aware of what was happening at 7:30 PM that evening.
If Erin hadn't come to check on me when she did there are too many negative things that could have happened to me. Due to her fast action, I did not have to go to ICU. Due to Erin's care and attention to me, along with the care of others, I was able to leave 15 days after my transplant.
Erin is an outstanding nurse, person, and mentor to students. She made me feel like the most important person under her care on the days she worked.
