Erica embodies GBMC's vision of, "To every patient, every time, we will provide the care that we would want for our own loved ones." Erica started her career here as a nursing student working in the Surgical ICU, and upon her graduation in 2009, continued in the SICU as a registered nurse. Her extraordinary compassion and ability to build relationships extends well beyond the SICU, touching everybody with whom she works. During the nomination phase, Erica received three formal nominations, one from a fellow nurse, one from unit leadership, and most importantly, one from her patient. The stories in her nominations were compelling, and in preparation for her award ceremony, countless other stories surfaced. Over the past months, Erica earned three unit-based awards for the most patient compliments during leader rounding. On a separate occasion, during a meeting with a fellow employee from GBMC Hospice, Erica's clinical partner received accolades and praise for the care she provided to her father and extended family as they dealt with his illness and subsequent loss.

In addition to Erica's extraordinary care and compassion, she is diligent in her pursuit of safe, high quality care for her patients. Her nominations included stories of her communication and teamwork. One story identified her recognition of incongruity in communication between the hospital team members in the care of a clinically complex patient and her vigilant pursuit to bring the team together to develop a plan of care that was appropriate for both the patient and her family.

Erica not only exemplifies the vision of GBMC, but also the expectations of a DAISY Award honoree. She goes above and beyond to meet our patient's expectations, significantly affects the clinical outcome of her patients, and demonstrates the necessary clinical courage as a team member to assure safe, quality care. She has earned this international recognition, and to share the words printed on the nomination form submitted by her patient "she deserves every award the hospital has to offer".
