Being the mother of a child with many health issues, we've had our fair share of struggles. This morning, my son was scheduled for an 8:00 am check in at the St. Paul Hospital for a sedated brain MRI due to a new diagnosis of Epilepsy. It was a long drive into the hospital due to weather; I was nervous about my son's procedure and just felt like I was rushing. Dawn made it very clear to me from the minute we met that she was there to take on some of my fear and anxiety, she was there to not only answer my questions but also my son's questions in a way that he could understand and that she was simply just there for us.
My son is high anxiety and she made him feel so comfortable that he didn't even notice the IV going in his arm or that we were walking towards the back for him to go to sleep for his MRI. She walked me out of the MRI area as my son was wheeled back and noticed that I was crying. The hug she gave me and the look she gave me made me confident that everything would be okay and that he was in good hands. She stayed with us from the time he was done with his MRI until discharge, made sure we knew our discharge instructions, and that we could call anytime with any questions. She was more than just a nurse caring for my son today, she was a friend and I am forever thankful for her.
