...Brigid demonstrates all of the ICARE criteria; however she really focuses on advocacy for the Veterans. Brigid had a Veteran that was receiving a treatment he did not want. The Veteran often complained to Brigid about treatment, and he didn't want it. Brigid encouraged the Veteran to address his concerns with his MD. The veteran felt he had to listen to the MD so Brigid began placing notes in CPRS for staff to follow up on. Brigid took that time to sit with the Veteran and explain to him, he has the right to refuse treatment. Veteran was able to voice his concerns to his MD. This allowed the Veteran's wishes to be honored.

As another example Brigid contacted a former Green Bay Packer and asked him if he would be willing to come in and spend some time with the Veterans from the RECC Division. Brigid came in on her weekend off she will help facilitate the event. The Packer player came and spoke to the Veterans. He asked them trivia questions and then allowed the Veterans to ask him questions. He then spent a few minutes with the each individual veteran (almost 50 of them) and gave them an autographed photo. He then spent the rest of the afternoon watching the football game with the Veterans. The Veterans voiced their satisfaction and enjoyment of the event.

Bridget also conducted on informal interview with a spy for the Allies from WW II. Brigid videotaped the interview and will provide it to the recreation therapists to share with the Veterans. Brigid also obtained a copy of the book about the spy titled "They Dared Return." Brigid had a copy autographed and is donating it to the VA library. When one of the Veterans on 9C found out about the book he wanted a copy. Brigid took it upon herself to get an autographed copy for the Veteran. The Veteran was extremely happy with the book.
