Beth is a fairly new nurse on our unit, but you wouldn't know it by watching her work. She is consistently a hard worker who is always smiling as well as efficient and knowledgeable regarding her patients and their care. What makes Beth special is that she gives her patients 100% of her attention when she is in their room.

Recently we had a middle aged male patient who was admitted for a very scary and uncertain diagnosis. He and his family struggled through a lengthy admission, not sure of what the outcome would be. Beth was his nurse on several PM shifts during his stay and gave him the attention, patience, and time that he needed. Along with his family, she played an integral role in his recovery. Eventually the patient was discharged to home with several follow-up appointments, medication changes, and unanswered questions regarding whether he would ever return to 'normal' again.

Several weeks after the patient was discharged, he and his wife returned to 9th floor and approached the front desk, where I was working as the charge nurse that evening. They asked if Beth was working, and coincidentally, she was. Another nurse went to get her and as Beth rounded the corner by the nurse's station the patient walked towards her, outstretched his arms, and embraced her with tears in his eyes. Once he let go of her I could see that she had tears in her eyes as well. He and his wife thanked Beth, as well as the other nurses and techs who were in the vicinity, for the excellent nursing care they received while in the hospital. They shared with Beth how his recovery has been going and the strides he has made towards becoming his 'old self'. After a few minutes they hugged again, parted ways, and the patient and his wife left the floor, waving and thanking everyone one last time. As soon as they were gone Beth returned to work, off to see her patients and give them the same care she had given to this patient.

She is the perfect example of what true nursing care looks like. She is an outstanding nurse and we are lucky to have her on our unit to provide excellent, compassionate care to the patients we serve every day.
