Aster Menghstab is a very caring and empathetic nurse. She takes the time to sit and talk with her patients. And she gives her patients time to vent and express their feelings. She has a very calm demeanor and never appears frustrated or rushed. This week she really went above and beyond in my opinion, but to Aster I know it was just an ordinary day.

We had a patient on the Garden GPU who came in with a diagnosis of Diarrhea, HIV positive, male, 23 years old. The young man is from Michigan, but he came from Washington were he had just graduated college. When the nurse received report from the emergency department she was informed that the family doesn't know his diagnosis, and he didn't want them to know. He had several lab test done, continued to have diarrhea, stools samples negative for infection, he was becoming progressively weak, and just looking ill. You could see the concern on his face and also his family.

During rounds the patient's condition was discussed with Aster as his nurse. The Hospitalist informed the Team of the patient's status, saying that his counts are low and he has HIV with a poor prognosis. He also informed the Team that he had not shared his finding with the patient. The Hospitalist told the Team that the patient always has a visitor an Infectious Disease will see him today. Aster was an advocate for her patient and informed the Hospitalist, of the patient's concern because "no one is telling me anything". She also suggested that he ask the family to step out of the room so he could talk with the patient.

After rounds Aster was filled with empathy and concern for the patient. There was no family in the room, so she went and sat with the patient. She told him that he doesn't have to be alone, and shouldn't be alone during his illness. She told him that she is a mother and would want her son to tell her what was wrong if he was ill. She says she loves her son and believes his mom loves him as well. She talked to him about how his mom visits daily and appears concerned. She encouraged him to let his mom know what was going on with him.

Later that evening his mom came to visit and the patient told her his diagnosis, and they cried together. Aster is truly deserving of the DAISY Award, because no one should feel alone with a terminal illness. She is the DAISY of the Garden GPU Team.
