Amy Keenan is the first DAISY Award recipient at Fox Chase Cancer Center to be nominated by a patient. When the patient had Amy as her nurse for her first infusion, she immediately felt a connection and was comforted by Amy’s “smile, gentle voice, caring personality and compassion.” Though the patient hoped she would have Amy for her subsequent infusions, that wasn’t always the case. However, Amy brightened her day even when she wasn’t her nurse.
Recently, when the patient was hospitalized at Fox Chase for four days, Amy came to visit her. She was in that wing of the hospital visiting colleagues and saw the patient’s name on the board. Amy came into the room and said, “I had to come see my girl!” It turns out the patient was feeling particularly bad that day. “It warmed my heart!” the patient said. “I could not stop smiling. Amy was the medicine I needed to make me feel better. What a wonderful surprise from an angel!”
Amy goes above and beyond the standard responsibilities of an infusion room nurse and serves as an asset to Fox Chase. Before starting in the infusion room in January 2012, Amy came to Fox Chase as a Nurse Extern in 2007 before transitioning into her nursing career in 2008. She received her OCN in March 2012.
