My mother was a patient on 5 South for 7 days in February of this year. She became very disoriented at night. For 48 hours, she would not sleep. I stayed with her day and night for 4 days and I do know how difficult those 2 nights were. My mother continually kept trying to get out of bed. She was not able to stand alone so this was a danger to her. She attempted this every 10 minutes for two straight nights. Amber was her nurse both of those nights. My patience wore thin with my mother by the second night without sleep.
Amber was so compassionate and caring and tried every attempt to gain cooperation. She alerted the hospitalist, got her some medication, but it did not help. Amber was in the room every time the alarm went off to alert us that another get out of bed attempt was occurring. Her patient assignment was busy so I knew how difficult this was for her. She never lost her calm voice, trying to reason with my mother. She was so compassionate -- I was so impressed as I was getting annoyed by my mother's behavior -- it was very tiring.
Amber remained so professional for those two nights. She went above and beyond for this difficult patient who is my mother. The excellent care she received allowed her to leave the hospital after 7 days and return to her assisted living at Fairhaven. This is due in large part to Amber's excellent care. She deserves recognition for the care she renders to her patients.
