I saw her advocate for a patient when the patient was concerned about the esthetics they would encounter with their appearance upon waking from surgery. She saw this concern and together we brought it to the surgeon's attention. In the end, thanks to Shannon's discussion prior to surgery, the patient received what they wanted.

Shannon requested to work in the Operating Room, knowing she already had a job in Main Pre/Post Surgery after graduation. I was impressed she wanted to see the OR side of things as a capstone student. She knew she would gain knowledge that would benefit her in Pre/Post Surgery when dealing with patients.
The OR can be a scary place with a lot of big personalities. It's rare that a nursing student gets didactic training in their nursing program related to the OR. Shannon is a very detail-oriented nurse. She always seemed to be interested in knowing the whole picture when it came to patient care. Her desire for additional information was apparent.
We spent a lot of time looking up each procedure so she could see an evidence-based resource – one that was readily available to her to help her understand the patient's disease process or disorder better.

Through communication, Shannon was able to make the patient's small desire come to fruition. Shannon understands that communication is key to teamwork. She displayed that throughout her capstone experience. We are proud to have her as a nursing colleague!
