Palmer Legare, BSN

University of Maryland Baltimore, School of Nursing
Baltimore, MD
United States
Passionate about his work, he recognized a need for medical education, physical assessment for adults and children, and health care in these communities.

Palmer Legare is a natural leader, an accountable and civil nursing student, and a community member who strives for excellence and diversity. Before he came into nursing, Palmer worked as an advocate, activist, and educator for indigenous communities in Guatemala. He worked to empower and educate communities through non-profit organizations. Passionate about his work, he recognized a need for medical education, physical assessment for adults and children, and health care in these communities. He became a nurse because he wanted to know how to medically care for people with an understanding that health is central to a good life.
Palmer excelled in his clinical experiences. He is a sponge for knowledge. He was given a senior practicum to work with a High School nurse in caring for a community of students. He was thrilled to go in and understand the population and see what he could do and learn. Palmer enjoys both sides of learning, doing while gaining knowledge, and when he is doing, he brings all he has to the clinical environment. His excellent communication skills serve him well in making patients feel listened to and understood. Palmer understands the determinants of health and the impact they have on healthcare and does not shy away in addressing injustice around healthcare. Palmer will be a different kind of nurse, one who looks at the problems of the world and works and cares for individuals and groups to make the world a better place by giving them their health, he will be a patient and family advocate.
