He received an honorary PhD in Caring Science in 2015, bestowed by Dr. Jean Watson for his lifelong work in advancing caring science practice, education, and research.

Jim is the Executive Director, Professional Practice, Nursing Leadership and Research, Patient Care Services, Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Prior to this position, Jim was Regional Director of PCS Operations in Northern California and Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Kaiser Fremont Medical Center in Fremont.

Before joining Kaiser, as a certified nurse executive, Jim has held multiple executive leadership positions. As a former International Director of Clinical Development, Jim lived and worked in Germany and Japan for over four years, where he led the establishment of educational centers of excellence and directed clinical research programs. Jim currently holds several Adjunct Faculty positions. He is the founding CNO/COO of the Watson Caring Science Institute and is considered an expert on the topics of Caring Science and the Theory of Human Caring. He received an honorary PhD in Caring Science in 2015, bestowed by Dr. Jean Watson for his lifelong work in advancing caring science practice, education, and research.

Jim also spearheaded the Kaiser Permanent Northern California Nurse Scholars Academy.  The Academy provides support for their employees to pursue both their personal and professional career goals. Jim will be graduating in December from USF’s ELDNP program. As a student, Jim has been a delight to work with and his support of fellow students has been evident from the very first day of class. His passion for the professional is palpable.
