One patient in our unit with the condition Myasthenia gravis had undergone a tracheotomy due to his affected respiratory muscle. He could not speak nor write, so his nurse, Xiao Youwang, tried really hard to understand what the patient meant by his eye movements. Youwang was constantly with the patient, making eye contact and talking to him. He managed to effectively communicate with Mr. Wang and provided excellent nursing care. We nurses all believed that caring for Mr. W was a great challenge to our patience, responsibility and professional accountability, but Xiao Youwang nailed it! He is the one who personifies warmth and hope to desperate patients!
Xiao Youwang has great empathy with the patients and always treats them as he would his own family. For example, Ms. L, an elderly lady, was admitted to our unit after having a pacemaker implanted. One night, Ms. L was so restless that she tried to pull out her endotracheal intubation and pacemaker guide wire. Youwang kept a close eye on Ms. L and talked with her throughout the night to calm her down. At midnight, Youwang had to restrain Ms. L with straps because of her continual thrashing about. The poor lady was terrified and determinedly resisted the restraints. After thoughtful consideration, Youwang removed the restraints and held her hands to comfort her all night long. Gradually Ms. L calmed down and fell asleep. Although he felt so tired, Youwang was relieved and thankful for the patient's calmness.
So this is Xiao Youwang who is an angel for patients in the middle of the night and who demonstrates amazing love and devotion!
