Three years ago, my husband and I geared for a very difficult day. The day our 10-month old son would receive a cochlear implant for severe sensorineural hearing loss. Getting him off to the OR was very hard and the time we spent in the waiting room was even harder. When the doctor came to tell us that all was well, and the surgery went as planned we were overjoyed, but then to the scary part, who is taking care of him now?
We were told that only one parent could go back to PACU to see him—me, being a mom, couldn't let my husband go first.
My son is a very loving and touchy little thing. I always felt that because of his inability to hear he just wanted to touch and to be held. When I went to see him, a nurse was loving on him and snuggling him as if he was her own child. Being a PA, and my husband a neurologist, we could not believe the degree of love and care she gave our son. This was one of the most stressful days of our lives and she made it all better with her caring and loving ways. I took a picture of her rocking my son that day and have thought of her a thousand times—finally today, fate has brought us together as I now work at AMC and walked past her. Immediately recognizing her after three years because she left such a positive impression. Nurses are what makes medicine. Thank you so much, Vina! We love you.
