Vera is all about patient care. She is constantly checking patients, follows very closely their care. Is not afraid to call MD to get her patient what they need and/or want. She is very helpful to her coworkers. She is a wonderful person in general. She is the kind of person we should try to be.

Vera is so sweet, compassionate and thorough with her patients. She makes them feel special and cared for even if everything is harried. She is a role model for all us nurses.

Vera is an extremely compassionate and thorough nurse. I know you can always count on her to care for her patients and co-workers and always lends a helping hand. She is a nurse that I would be completely comfortable with her taking care of any of my loved one

Since the days of Florence Nightingale we have been aware that there is both the art and science of nursing. The science part is academic, not only academic but also having the intelligence to apply that science to caring for your patient. The art . . .that is different. In today's world of technology and high tech equipment for patient care (computer documentation, barcoding your medications, smart IV pumps that monitor IV fluid and medications closely, beds that alarm when you patient gets up) it is easy for today's nurse to get wrapped up in all the tasks involved in monitoring all this equipment; therefore, the art can easily get lost. Vera is one of those nurses who have both.

Earning her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from IU Southeast, she has the intelligence to understand and monitor her patient's lab results and she has the critical thinking skills to identify changes in her patient's condition that need her immediate attention and intervention. But her most important nursing asset is her "art" of nursing. Walking down the hall, I have heard her say to patients...I am getting ready to end my shift, I just want you to know that it has been a real privilege taking care of you today, I will not be back tomorrow but I hope you continue to feel better. I recently had an 84 year old patient tell me that Vera was the very best nurse in the world . . .why, I asked. He said well, I was feeling really blue the other day and felt like I would never get any better. She sat down on the side of my bed, took my hand and said, let's talk about this. I want to know how I can help...

That is Vera, taking care of the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of her patients. She is a woman of great faith and integrity. She is kind, gentle and shows a genuine concern for each patient she encounters. Vera truly makes a positive difference in each life she touches. I cannot imagine a better representative for this DAISY Award. She has the spirit, the heart, the soul and the compassion that every nurse should have.
