I arrived at St. John's with pain in my chest. After EGD, I experienced hypoxic respiratory failure. I was admitted with incarcerated esophagus hernia - needing surgery. With my lungs in poor shape, I would not be able to have the surgery. I was on all types of breathing apparatus. There was a conversation I might need to go to rehab to build up my lungs and then return for surgery. I met a wonderful nurse, Vanessa, who was with me for two days. During that time she encouraged me, challenged me, cared for my well being in such a caring and compassionate way. I am so grateful. During these two days with Vanessa she gradually kept lowering the amount of O2 starting at 60% - down to breathing on my own. Her attitude was one of confidence which carries over to the patient. I can do this! Vanessa walks into my room full of joy and hope for a better day. You know she cares. I felt like I was her only patient with all the attention I received. What an awesome nurse! She deserves much praise and appreciation! Thank you! I was able to have my Hiatal surgery two days after I was breathing on my own. I am recovering well and grateful for St. John's Hospital. Your hospital exemplifies the care, respect, and competence you desire!
