Ms. Valecia Calvin is the actual definition of the DAISY Award she demonstrates every day when providing care for her veteran patients and their families. She approaches each patient with obvious care and compassion, and she has a reputation of being able to quickly establish a trusting and respectful rapport with even the most difficult patients that are angry or afraid of their health situation.
As her Nurse Manager, I have observed Ms. Calvin approach each patient in such a personal and interesting manner that most of our veterans she cares for are singing her praises before lunch. I have personally been approached by so many veterans and/or family members wanting to inform me of what “a gem I have in this RN”.
One example can be demonstrated when a patient with debilitating Dementia was going to require placement since the family was no longer able to provide care safely. The veteran was confused and difficult to manage but Ms. Calvin’s calm approach and encouraging talk soon had the patient calm and following more commands with a significant decrease in agitation or resistance. She also contacted the Chaplain Service and had them speak with the family to help ease the expressed guilt they shared about “giving up on the patient”. This assisted the family to work through the process of this life change and to come to understand the need for placement. The day he was transferred to a Nursing Home was one of joy and hope instead of sadness and guilt.
This is only one example of Ms. Calvin’s exemplary skill not only clinically but in managing care and interacting with all facets of the veteran’s care team and support system to ensure the absolute best possible outcome for her patients.
