My dad arrived at Brigham and Women's and he was in grave danger after suffering a massive cardiac event at the young age of 64. Tom was one of many great nurses involved in my dad's care, but Tom 's role was crucial in the first 72 hours when my dad was most critical. Tom was up for that challenge and performed his job duties with excellence, efficiency, and amazing compassion.
As a fellow healthcare provider and business administrator, I knew right away that couldn't have hand-picked a better nurse to be with my dad at his toughest time. Tom gave exceptional medical care. Tom spent time educating me and even drawing diagrams to assist my comprehension of the cardiac condition. Tom had a great sense of humor and helped ease a very tough time. Most importantly, he treated my dad with dignity and unrivaled compassion. Tom bathed him, trimmed his beard, and made him feel good in the most precious of days.
Tom is a guy that I enjoyed getting to know during my lonely times sitting at my dad's bedside for hours that ticked away slowly. He's a guy that drives up from Rhode Island to be part of an extraordinary team of nurses. Not only is he a part of that team, but it is clear he is a team leader. He does his job with great enthusiasm and its clear he was well respected by the world renowned and brilliant doctors here on the cardiac ICU.
I must recommend Tom Borland with my highest possible recommendation to receive this DAISY Award. His charisma, compassion, intelligence, and sense of pride blend in a way that will make him a leader in this profession for many years to come. Thank you to Tom from the bottom of my heart!
