My 12-year-old daughter was brought to the Emergency Department three times in one week for unexplained and uncontrolled swelling in her extremities. She was also in a great deal of pain, yet was uncharacteristically stoic. On the third visit, we were cared for by Tina Carney. She epitomizes the role of patient advocate and dedication to patient-centered care.
Upon presentation to the ED, my daughter was exhibiting swelling throughout her body, pain, and a general lack of mobility. She was also complaining of a feeling like she had swallowed a rock. Based on the provider's assessment, there was no obstruction. In addition, her lab results were normal. Given this information, the team recommended discharge with a primary care follow up.
Tina strongly advocated for her to be admitted for observation. After a discussion with the providers, an inpatient consult was obtained. My daughter was not admitted for observation but instead became an inpatient admission due to her presentation and worsening symptoms. On the way to the pediatrics floor, my daughter experienced rapid facial and eyelid swelling. My daughter received IV steroids overnight to address those symptoms and was able to be discharged safely in the morning.
I am confident that if Tina had not advocated so determinedly and efficiently, we would have been discharged home only to return a few hours later.
We are extremely blessed by your assessment, advocacy, and collaboration. My daughter noted several times that nurses really keep things going at a hospital. You are an Extraordinary DAISY Nurse! Thank you, Tina!
