The Staff of the M2 Pre-surgical Center and the Post-anesthesia Care Unit would like to nominate our co worker, Thomas Springer for the DAISY Award recognizing Extraordinary Nurses. The Honoree is defined as a nurse who is compassionate, kind and possesses excellent interpersonal skills. This worthy recipient is also recognized by their peers as a role model of compassion and caring in the clinical setting. No one is more deserving of this award than Tom Springer. The following patient and staff excerpts from Tom's nomination highlight his exceptional caring:

"Tom did all his work with a manner that was exceptional. He made us feel as though caring for our needs was the most important thing to him- despite the fact that he has to do this many times a day and many days a year. His being able to carry out his responsibilities as though they were not a trivial task was remarkable to me and made all the difference."

"The PACU staff relies on Tom to keep the families informed of their loved ones progress and prepares the families for the PACU visit. Tom uses discretion and sensitivity when bringing the families to the bedside for the first time. During an unfortunate medical event, Tom can be relied upon to support the families and arrange a quiet setting for the physician and family to meet."

"I am a two-time cancer survivor. I spend many hours and days every year at Memorial. I love MSKCC but not every experience is without stress or frustration at things that go wrong or when people are less than supportive. But when a nurse such as Tom Springer comes along, I feel so grateful that I want others to know." This particular patient needed to be home by 6pm to pick up her son. Her procedure was delayed and it was getting late. "Mr. Springer learned of my situation and took my case by becoming my patient advocate. His genuine caring and persistent shepherding of me through the day made all the difference. That is priceless to a patient."

"Tom was exceptional. He made us feel as though caring for our needs was the most important thing to him, despite the fact that he has to do this many times a day many times a year."

"Tom Springer was exceptionally kind, attentive, and helpful in providing my family ongoing information and progress while they were anxiously waiting to hear the results of my surgery."
