I had just found out that I was going to have to undergo surgery on my lung. I was scared and crying and didn't want to go thru with it. I didn't trust the doctors and I was crying hysterically. I was about to leave when this tall guy with a beard hesitated but he came in, put his hand on me and said it would be okay. He told me that this was serious buddy and that I want you to consider that these doctors are good, that he has been working with them for years and trust them they wouldn't want to do this surgery if it wasn't absolutely necessary. I then told him I was scared I never had any work done in my life, he then said he understands, he was scared too of surgery, it's okay. So he said do you understand why they want to do this surgery? I said "yes, they just want to cut me". He said no your lung collapsed again and if you don't get this done it can move your heart and in fact it has already began to move and he said let me show you. He grabbed a computer and pulled up my x-rays to show me how my lung collapsed and my heart is moving and can affect my trachea and I may not recover the same after this. For some reason hearing this gave me comfort. Crazy, but Thomas showed me what was going on and how I needed this surgery. He hugged me and said it would be okay and he would be there for me, and he wasn't even my nurse. He then helped with my chest tube going back in and checked on me for the rest of the day and week. He gets the "Awesome Award". Thomas, I thank you for your help and you going above and beyond for a distraught patient. God Bless.
