As a nurse here, I am proud to say that I work with a team that considers each other family. Together we have celebrated countless holidays and birthdays while working and away from home. We have celebrated new life as team members welcomed babies and mourned the loss of loved ones. Through all the challenges life sends our way, we have offered each other love and support. Although we pride ourselves on providing excellent patient care, nothing can prepare a team for the day a co-worker becomes a patient at your hospital.
M, a well-loved and respected nurse on our unit, received a diagnosis of an aggressive form of cancer that would require surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation. After receiving the news, her work family was immediately by her side offering encouragement and support. Each team member offered M support in their own way. From calls and texts to cards, words of encouragement were sent to M. Money and gift cards were donated by some while other team members purchased jewelry and shirts to help with fundraising efforts that would benefit her cancer treatment expenses. From ribbons to hair color, and jewelry, our team members proudly wore teal to display their support of M's battle with cancer. Meals, help around the house, and childcare was offered by some while others provided transportation to treatments. Many team members utilized their breaks to visit M while she received chemotherapy. As an outward display of our love, support, and encouragement for her, team members created personalized quilt squares. Each one unique and expressing sentiments of hope and encouragement. Our manager collected these squares and lovingly pieced them together to form a quilt. She described the project as "a labor of love." Upon completion, the quilt was presented to M so that she could take it with her to treatments.
In October, M rang the cancer bell signifying the completion of her active treatment and the beginning of a life with cancer in remission. She was surrounded by family, friends, and teammates holding signs proudly proclaiming, "We are team M." While M faced her cancer battle with admirable courage, strength, and determination, her work family was by her side to offer love, support, and encouragement. I am truly honored to be a member of such an incredible and inspiring team. Together we are BayCare, we are a family, and "her fight is our fight!"
