One day in October, an atypical patient was transferred to 1 North for post-operative care. Kasey Griggs, RN; Robin Davis, RN; Kelly "Denise" Sullivan, Nurse Assistant and April Watkins, Unit Secretary were on staff that day. The patient began to experience signs and symptoms of acute respiratory distress; this exacerbated her anxiety. The Medical Response Team was activated. The surgeon was notified but was in another surgery. Pamela Olds, RN from the Recovery Room was familiar with the patient. She ran over to provide assistance to the team. The patient was taken back to the Operating Room for emergency surgery. Afterward, the patient was transferred to ICU on a ventilator. Each team member kept the family updated and comforted them throughout this difficult time. They took turns checking on the patient and family even while she was on a different unit. Thankfully, the patient did not recall the incident and she was discharged home a few days later. The outcome was good due to the unit's teamwork, diligence, and early intervention.
