Disney's Mary Poppins is known for her caring ways and magical powers. Since B3 Surgery opened its doors, the unit has been fortunate to have its own Mary Poppins in the form of Nurse Taylor Crocetto. While Taylor may not exactly float through the air with an umbrella, she does seamlessly float from patient to patient, sharing her compassion and smile with everyone. In addition, her ability to make you feel like you are the only person in the room is her magical trait which she shares with patients and coworkers alike.
Frequently mentioned in the Press Ganey surveys, Taylor goes above and beyond for each patient. She greets them with her warmth and smiles from the start. Even when the day becomes tough or exhausting, her compassion doesn't wane. Recently, Taylor was pulled to another unit. A patient came to the door saying he just had an accident all over himself. Taylor just smiled at him and said, "It's ok, sweetie, be right there." There was no hint of disgust in her voice and Taylor immediately put the patient at ease.
When B3 rolled out its transgender reassignment surgery program last summer, there was a big learning curve as the staff had to be coached on cultural sensitivity. Once again Taylor shined, and during patient rounding, I was told by many of the transgender surgery patients that they felt more comfortable when Taylor was in the room.
Taylor has even developed relationships with patients beyond the hospital. One such patient was admitted to B3 with a terminal cancer diagnosis. This patient and Taylor bonded immediately, and at discharge, the two exchanged information so they could keep in touch. Taylor and this patient made plans to go to dinner, but unfortunately, the patient succumbed to her illness before they could go. Taylor, along with other staff members from the floor, went to the viewing and funeral, and the family could not express their appreciation enough for Taylor and B3's compassion during their toughest days. B3 has been lucky to have its own Mary Poppins in Taylor Crocetto, a nurse who makes the hospital a better place.
