Taylar, Clinical Supervisor on Oncology, has helped me through more situations than I'd like. I count on her excellent clinical judgment and profound compassionate care each time I work. There have been countless times that she would read the dismay on my face and anticipate a bad situation before I could even ask her about it and her calming nature has relieved me of the stress each time.
Recently, we were receiving a patient from the emergency room who was presumed to be stable and reading through her notes before she arrived to the floor, Taylar and I agreed that something was off and we were wondering what we could be missing. She arrived to the floor and Taylar was standing by my side as I greeted the patient. As a bedside nurse, seeing your patient in distress can cause you distress, and I was distressed. I panicked and couldn't articulate what tests I wanted to recommend to the doctor. I bounced ideas off Taylar and each time I recommended something she either acknowledged it as something I should suggest or was already in the midst of doing it, like getting a blood sugar. It seems simple, but I look forward to each shift to working with Taylar. She is ALWAYS supportive and she always makes me feel competent. This patient ultimately was transferred off our floor and I would have advocated for that as well, but having her support and tenacity got the patient exactly what she needed.
Unfortunately, Taylar and I have been in this same situation more times than I'd like. I can always count on Taylar to show up and advocate for me and my patients. I strive to be like her. She never shows her frustration even when I've called and asked a thousand silly questions at 4 am. Taylar is a model nurse and deserves to be recognized.
