For three evenings Tammy was my evening "Sunshine" in my darkness. Her smile was contagious, whether Tammy was taking vitals, walking past the door or explaining the "Present" Airlife that I had a difficult time using. Tammy knew I was a teacher and gave me a Pediatric Volumetric Incentive Spirometer to share with my students when I returned to school. Tammy also shared a story of how to tell students - how grapes (your lungs) need oxygen, very funny!
Tammy also shared "nurses" evening ice cream, such a treat after a bland liquid diet.
On the third evening, Tammy was there when I had my meltdown. With my hair a mess and in need of a shower, Tammy held me close and let me cry and vent. When I pulled myself together Tammy had a pink container filled with toiletries, socks, and towels, then showed me where to shower. Tammy said, "Take as long as you need, it's where I do my best thinking."
Tammy said goodbye before her shift end with comforting hugs and reassurance.
Before I was discharged another nurse came in with a vase of yellow roses and said, "These are from Tammy". I was so touched. What a caring, thoughtful, compassionate nurse Tammy is and I know she will have a very bright future.
