Tami cared for the patient on Christmas Eve, and knowing her Christmas would be like just another day in the ICU, Tami worked to make it special for the patient.
We had a young patient s/p COVID that had been on ECMO for over 1 month and would be spending Christmas in the ICU. The patient hadn't been allowed any visitors due to COVID and had not yet met her baby girl that she delivered just before going on ECMO.
Tami cared for the patient on Christmas Eve, and knowing her Christmas would be like just another day in the ICU, Tami worked to make it special for the patient.
Tami brought in a small tree with decorations for the patient's room. She also brought a few small gifts for the patient to unwrap. The patient was very weak and had limited dexterity/fine motor skills, so Tami wrapped the gifts in tissue paper that the patient would be able to open.
Tami also gave her thoughtful gifts - a blanket because the patient was always cold, and nice lotion because all she currently had was standard hospital-issued lotion. Tami's actions raised the spirits of the patient and the staff!
