A patient with trendy electric blue glasses laid in bed concerned and frightened after having been sedated on a ventilator for several weeks. One of the patient's primary concerns was how she would pay her rent, pay her bills, and continue to get healthy to make it out of the hospital. Sylwia, recognized the concern and anxiety in the patient, as the patient began to realize the potential of being unable to perform the above tasks.
Sylwia took it upon herself to eliminate these fears. She spent countless hours communicating with the patient via paper and pen and lip-reading. Through this communication, Sylwia was able to utilize a hospital iPad and helped the patient pay her monthly bills as well as her rent. Performing these minor tasks, eliminated major stress on the patient which allowed the patient to focus more on her healing process. Additionally, Sylwia recognized that the patient was missing her son. She had been unable to communicate or see her son for over ten days at this point in time. Sylwia coordinated FaceTime phone calls with the son and was able to virtually reunite them
All these tasks, as simple as they may seem, provided the patient with the ability to relax more and focus on her healing process. Sylwia's compassion and dedication to her patients, and their families are always at the forefront of her mind. Through this kind of nursing, she is able to reach more lives than just her patients. As the great Florence Nightingale once said, "I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into action which bring results." Sylwia's actions speak louder than her words. Thank you for being a true nurse!
