Sylvia Gonzalez is a very caring and compassionate nurse, not only to her patients but also to her co-workers. I can recall numerous patient interactions I have been mutually involved in with her that have impressed and enlightened me. When patients are expiring or in critical condition, she jumps to action without being asked even when the patients aren't hers. She is not a bedside nurse by role but takes on, over and above, to provide support to co-workers and to provide the very best empathic, quality care all persons deserve. Sylvia is amazingly resilient and versatile, often being a go-to team member.
Recently, she came into one of the Emergency Rooms, where a patient had expired. Three members of the family were present, more were trickling in. She knew how to predict their cultural needs and what was about to occur; that the family would become overcome with grief, yell out and otherwise require team support. She literally provided full-service therapy, case management and crisis intervention to each and every family member. There were at least 7 members of the family ranging in ages of 21 to 68. She knew exactly how to respond to and approach each member to meet their needs. She became part of their group, walking with them down this road and help them to confirm the reality of the death of their patriarch. Her dynamic approach is a wonder to behold, an example of grace and compassion that I will not forget.
Not only can I highlight the scenario above but I also want to highlight her goodness when no one is watching. She has put together care kits for unfortunate travelers to be used by Case Management to provide to patients deemed "needy". The kits contain items such as a clean t-shirt, deodorant, socks, etc. This one gesture could possibly make a person's day. To feel fresh and clean is essential for their mind and spirit. That is Sylvia's style, to make others happy. We are very fortunate to have her on our team.
